The bible says the tongue is untamable. Well if we try to do it ourselves it's true. But there is no limit to what God can do. So don't just read James 3:1-12 and throw your hands up in despair. Read also James 3:13-18 because there is a good reason it is there. Still don't get it? Well here is a key read James 1:5 and hopefully you'll see. Stick To Three Topics
In the old days parents would warn their children to stick to three topics to save them from embarrassment. The topics were the weather, school, and recreation. This is because they were topics that the child would know something about. Also they were relatively safe topics. As I thought about the stick to three topics advice last night I struck on an idea. When I find myself in the company of a gossip or gossips why not stick to three topics! Here are the topics I could stick to God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. I am sure no matter who or what came up I can work at least one or all of my three topics in. Why stop there! When I find myself in the presence of people who are into coarse joking I can stick to my three topics. Wow! I can use my three topics anywhere, where I want to set a guard over my tongue! Why didn't I think of this before! If I keep bringing God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit into my conversations they can guard my tongue! I should have remembered when I am trying to tame my tongue I am weak and can of myself do nothing. But, with God all things are possible! Sure some people might not want to talk to me after a while if I stick to my three topics. This is ok though. Because there are plenty of people who do love to talk about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Even so I must be careful not to let things get out of context, or twisted. So I need daily to be prayed up and read up and depending on God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit for guidance and help in all things I say and do. Anyway here I am with something new for me to try. Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile. Psalm 34:13, I said I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, while the wicked are before me. Psalm 39:1, The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked what is perverse. Proverb 10:32, If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless. James 1:26
