To Thy Own self Be True
"To thy own self be true." I have heard this phrase before and thought it was as bad as "Look out for number one." Both phrases could be selfish or self centered if taken the wrong way. But, "To thy own self be true." if taken the right way means be your self at all times be who you are. It also means don't lie to yourself about things. These two meanings are important when you view it from how your life impacts or affects others. By being a fake or wearing a mask you are only setting yourself and others up for hurt and disappointment. By lying to yourself, you are setting yourself and possibly others for hurt and disappointment. Sure being myself still causes some hurt and disappointment, but no where near devastatingly so as when I act fake or wear a mask. The most painful thing for a fake or a mask wearer is when they wake up one day and find no one trusts or believes them. Sure the mask you wear may protect you a little from some of life's hurts, or for a while make you feel important or what ever. But, in the end it spells trouble. And faking your interest, morals, lifestyle, or whatever ends up the same way. Telling little white lies ends up the same way too! Those are the hardest to give up because it is like dropping your shield and saying go on hit me! I pray some day I will over come that area of my life. I tell them when I am fearful, ashamed, embarrassed, feel inferior, and when I want to protect others. There is no good excuse! It is to high a price to pay! Because it costs me my integrity and trustworthiness! As I said so will wearing a mask or being a fake. Those were easier for me to drop. By being true to myself and who I am, I may not always be liked, appreciated, or rightly understood. But I have gained more peace with my Savior. I know that if I over come the white lies I will gain even more peace. Believing that if I don't give up I will win. I do believe I am getting stronger every day. So that is where I am today fighting on that battle field.
The integrity of the upright will guide them, but the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them. Proverbs 11:3, A tree is known by it's fruit. Matthew 12:33 (Or a man), The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I the Lord test the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 17:9-10, If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8, If any one among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless. James 1:26, Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! and the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. the tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. James 3:5-6,
